Derived from the words ‘dongarh’, meaning ‘mountains’, and ‘garh’ meaning ‘fort’, Dongargarh is full of hills and valleys, providing ample opportunities to revel in the beauty of nature.

Without a doubt, the main tourist draw is the Maa Bamleshwari Devi Temple, situated on a hilltop. From its imposing height at 1,600 feet, the temple is not only known for the spiritual succor it offers devotees, but is also a popular landmark for locals who can be seen lounging about rocky outcrops enjoying the panoramic views from the summit. The ropeway is more an attraction than a means of getting to the top and is the only passenger ropeway in the entire state of Chhattisgarh. The temple is of great spiritual importance and its smaller counterpart at the base of the hill is also revered.

A Jain temple on Chandragiri Hill is known for an ancient statue of the Teerthankara Chandraprabhuji. One of the largest Sikh gurudwaras in Chhattisgarh is also located in the heart of the city.
